Mon, 01 Jan 2024 00:30:20 -0600 en-us text/html https://www.msn.com/ Microsoft disables online Windows App Installer after attackers abuse it

Multiple threat groups have used the ms-appinstaller protocol handler to bypass protections and deliver ransomware and other malware.

Microsoft has disabled the App Installer functionality that allowed Windows 10 apps to be installed directly from a web page by clicking on a link that used the ms-appinstaller URI scheme. This functionality has been heavily abused in recent months by different threat actors to deploy ransomware and other malicious implants.

“Threat actors have likely chosen the ms-appinstaller protocol handler vector because it can bypass mechanisms designed to help keep users safe from malware, such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and built-in browser warnings for downloads of executable file formats,” Microsoft said in a report last week.

The protocol handler was disabled on December 28 with the release of App Installer version 1.21.3421.0 after the company previously warned about the Windows AppX Installer Spoofing Vulnerability (CVE-2021-43890) on the last Patch Tuesday.

How does Microsoft App Installer work?

App Installer is a feature that was introduced in Windows 10 in 2016 to facilitate the installation of Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, previously known as Windows Store apps. These applications can be deployed on all Windows devices and are distributed in a package format called MSIX as .msxi or .msixbundle files. MSIX was introduced in 2019 and replaced the older AppX packaging format for apps on the Microsoft Store.

However, MSIX packages don’t necessarily have to be deployed from the Microsoft Store, they can also be installed offline and can also be deployed from any website thanks to the ms-appinstaller URI scheme and protocol handler. Microsoft encourages enterprises to use MSIX packages to deploy their applications because they offer better reliability and installation success rate, as well as optimized bandwidth and disk space usage.

“MSIX enables enterprises to stay current and ensure their applications are always up to date. It allows IT pros and developers to deliver a user centric solution while still reducing the cost of ownership of application by reducing the need to repackage,” the company said.

When deployed directly from a website, the page will contain a link of the form ms-appinstaller:?source=http://link-to.domain/app-name.msix. When clicked, the browser will pass the request to the ms-appinstaller protocol handler in Windows, which will invoke App Installer. This is the same type of functionality seen with other apps that register custom protocol handlers in Windows, such as when clicking a button on a web page to join a conference call and having the browser automatically open the Zoom or Microsoft Teams desktop apps.

Extensive Microsoft App Installer abuse

Attackers started abusing the ms-appinstaller URI scheme a while ago by leading users to spoofed web pages for popular software and instead delivering malware packaged as MSIX. According to Microsoft, the technique saw adoption with multiple groups, culminating with a spike in attacks during November and December 2023.

At the beginning of December, an access broker group that Microsoft tracks as Storm-0569 launched a search engine optimization campaign that distributed BATLOADER using this technique. The group poisoned search results with links to web pages that posed as the official websites for legitimate software applications such as Zoom, Tableau, TeamViewer, and AnyDesk.

“Users who search for a legitimate software application on Bing or Google may be presented with a landing page spoofing the original software provider's landing pages that include links to malicious installers through the ms-appinstaller protocol,” Microsoft said. “Spoofing and impersonating popular legitimate software is a common social engineering tactic.”

If the rogue links are clicked, users are presented with the App Installer window, which displays an install button. If that button is clicked, the malicious MSIX package is installed along with additional PowerShell and batch scripts that deploy BATLOADER. This malware loader is then used to deploy additional implants such as the Cobalt Strike Beacon, the Rclone data exfiltration tool and the Black Basta ransomware.

Another access broker tracked as Storm-1113 that also specializes in malware distribution through search advertisements has also used this technique in mid-November 2023 to deploy a malware loader called EugenLoader by spoofing Zoom downloads. Since this group offers malware deployment as a service, EugenLoader has been used to deploy a variety of implants including Gozi, Redline stealer, IcedID, Smoke Loader, NetSupport Manager (also known as NetSupport RAT), Sectop RAT, and Lumma stealer. Another group tracked as Sangria Tempest (also known as FIN7) used EugenLoader in November to drop its infamous Carbanak malware framework which in turn deployed the Gracewire implant.

“In other cases, Sangria Tempest uses Google ads to lure users into downloading malicious MSIX application packages--possibly relying on Storm-1113 infrastructure--leading to the delivery of POWERTRASH, a highly obfuscated PowerShell script,” the Microsoft researchers said.

Yet another group tracked by Microsoft as Storm-1674 used Storm-1113’s infrastructure and services that abused the malicious the ms-appinstaller protocol handler to deploy SectopRAT or DarkGate. However, the group distributed links to the spoofed landing pages using messages on Teams. The landing pages spoofed Microsoft services like OneDrive and SharePoint and prompted users to download Adobe Acrobat Reader or other tools to access the files supposedly listed there.

All the rogue MSIX files delivered through such websites are digitally signed to prevent security warnings. By disabling the ms-appinstaller protocol handler by default, Microsoft forces such files to now be downloaded first to disk before being executed which means endpoint security products have a chance to scan and flag them.

While this breaks the installation of MSIX files directly from websites, such files can still be downloaded and installed offline, which shouldn’t impact companies that use this application packaging format. Users who do need the functionality can re-enable it by changing the Group Policy EnableMSAppInstallerProtocol to Disabled.

Fri, 29 Dec 2023 13:03:00 -0600 en-us text/html https://www.msn.com/ Microsoft disables vulnerable Windows component following malware campaigns

Microsoft Corp. has disabled a Windows feature that helps users download new applications after finding that hackers were using it to spread malware.

The company announced the move on Thursday. The Windows feature in question, which is known as the ms-appinstaller protocol handler, was previously disabled by Microsoft early last year for similar reasons. A hacking group had used it to spread malware disguised as an Adobe Inc. application.

Microsoft has developed several technologies to ease the task of installing new programs on Windows machines. One of those technologies is App Installer, an application setup tool built directly into the operating system. It helps users download programs stored in the popular MSIX file format.

The feature that Microsoft disabled is part of App Installer. It allows Windows users to install a program stored in the MSIX format by clicking on a download link. According to Microsoft, the decision to turn off the feature followed the discovery that hackers have been using it to distribute malware disguised as legitimate applications.

“Threat actors have likely chosen the ms-appinstaller protocol handler vector because it can bypass mechanisms designed to help keep users safe from malware, such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and built-in browser warnings for downloads of executable file formats,” Microsoft researchers detailed in a blog post

The cyberattacks began in mid-November. Microsoft determined that they were carried by four financially motivated threat actors tracked as Storm-0569, Storm-1113, Sangria Tempest and Storm-1674.

Two of the cybercrime groups, Storm-1113 and Sangria Tempest, used search engine ads to spread their malware. Users who clicked the ads were prompted to download malicious MSIX files disguised as legitimate programs. Microsoft believes that Sangria Tempest, which used the malicious ads to carry out extortion and ransomware campaigns, may have used infrastructure provided by Storm-1113 to support its hacking efforts.

Another threat actor, Storm-0569, spread malware via malicious websites. Those websites were designed to appear in Google and Bing results when users search for legitimate business applications. According to Microsoft, the hackers’ malware was disguised as applications from Zoom Video Communications Inc., Salesforce Inc.’s Tableau unit and other enterprise software providers.

The fourth threat actor detected by the company distributed malware via Microsoft Teams messages. The messages linked to webpages that mimicked the landing pages of OneDrive, SharePoint and other popular applications. The webpages attempted to trick users into downloading malicious MSIX programs.

To prevent future cyberattacks, Microsoft has blocked the Teams accounts used in the malware campaign. Additionally, the company disabled the code signing certifications of the malicious applications it identified as part of its research. The latter move will make it more difficult for hackers to trick users into downloading the malware.

Microsoft's Copilot AI app expands to iPhone, iPad - here's what you can do with it No result found, try new keyword! The app offers you a generative AI chatbot powered by the latest AI models, namely GPT-4 and DALL-E 3. Tue, 02 Jan 2024 01:01:40 -0600 en-us text/html https://www.msn.com/ Microsoft to remove this 28 years old Word-alternative free app from Windows 11, here’s how users will get affected

Microsoft is planning to remove WordPad from future versions of Windows. The latest build of Windows 11 in Canary channel no longer comes with pre-installed WordPad. This change aligns with Microsoft's plan to depreciate WordPad in future versions. Microsoft Word is recommended for rich text documents, while Windows Notepad is suggested for plain text documents. Users have plenty of alternatives, such as LibreOffice, Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Zoho Docs, and WPS Office, to seamlessly transition from WordPad.

Since Windows 95, WordPad has been there in every Windows version that Microsoft has launched till date. However, this might soon change as Microsoft is planning to remove this app from the future version of the Windows operating system.
The change has now started coming into effect with the latest build of Windows 11 in Canary channel. Windows Latest has reported that the Windows 11 Build 26020 or newer version in Windows Insider Canary channel, the WordPad no longer comes pre-installed in it. Provided you do a clean installation.
What does this mean
Windows Insider Preview builds have always been the test ground for Microsoft where it tests our new changes, features and improvements coming to the operating system. That said, WordPad going away from the latest Canary build of the operating system can be a step towards removal of the WordPad, as per the company’s plan of depreciating it in future versions of Windows 11.
Back in September 2023, Microsoft published on the support page, “WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.”
This also suggests that the WordPad is also expected to soon go away from the stable builds of Windows 11.
However, right now, the Windows 11 comes with WordPad app and the change has not been implemented in the stable build as of now.
What options users have and how this will affect them
There’s no shortage of word processing apps in the market. Open-source processors like LibreOffice, free options like Microsoft Notepad, and advanced features with Microsoft Word (via Microsoft 365) are available. Google Docs offers online editing without additional downloads. Third-party apps like Zoho Docs and WPS Office also provide diverse options.
Given the array of alternatives, WordPad's depreciation is unlikely to significantly affect users. Few predominantly rely on WordPad, and those who do can smoothly transition to other capable word processors. The varied choices ensure users can seamlessly adopt alternatives that best align with their preferences and requirements.

Microsoft’s latest AI chatbot, Microsoft Copilot, has just been made available to download for iOS and iPadOS. If you feel the need for another AI tool to tinker with, both can be downloaded from the App Store for free right now.

Microsoft Copilot (which was originally known as Bing Chat) is very similar to ChatGPT, and the other chatbots that litter the web. You put in your prompt — whether that's a question or a request for help penning an email or summary — and it'll spit out what's required. Copilot can also generate images from text due to an integration with the text-to-image generator, DALL-E3.

Interestingly, Copilot is capable of running GPT-4, which is shorthand for generative pretrained transformer. It's the software that allows the AI to generate human-like responses, and to accept both text and image inputs. For reference, the free version of ChatGPT currently makes use of GPT-3.5.

This isn’t the only difference between the two. Microsoft Copilot limits how many responses a user can make in a thread to around thirty. It'll also not allow access to image generation without creating an account. However, while testing both out it seemed Copilot was willing to give far longer answers to each question I offered. ChatGPT seemed to offer more human-like answers and felt less like it was just searching the web for responses.

Currently, it appears Copilot does not save any threads for you and you are unable to upload files other than photos. However, this is a vast improvement over ChatGPT which makes analyzing a photo far more complex than it needs to be.

I didn’t find much difference in speed when using either app. Both Copilot and ChatGPT were fast in their responses, although ChatGPT was slightly quicker. Finally, I asked both to compose an email to a distant friend asking to catch up. Microsoft Copilot responded with a template filled with options to help personalize the response from me, meanwhile, ChatGPT didn't offer alternative options but had a better composition.

It seems there are benefits to both apps at the moment, but there is nothing that would help to push one ahead of the other on Apple’s products. The biggest hindrance for Copilot is the limit on responses, which may be changed in the future if the app sees more use.
