If you are trying to connect your virtual machine to a local area network computer, but it is not working, or the Bridged network is not working in VMware, here are some solutions you can use to fix this problem. This is a very common scenario among new VMware users. Even if you have been using VMware for a long time and suddenly the Bridged networking has stopped working, you can also try these solutions.

There are many people, who often need to connect their virtual machine to a local area network computer to share files. This is very easy to do with your host machine. The problem begins when you try to do the same with a guest operating system in VMware. This happens because of the non-shared network adaptor which is responsible for creating the connection between a local area network computer and your virtual machine.

If the Bridged network is not working in VMware Guest OS on Windows 11/10, then the following different ways will help you fix the Bridged network problem in VMware-

1. Select the correct network connection
2. Restart VMware Bridge Control
3. Select a particular virtual network
4. Select correct bridged network connection
5. Restore all settings to default
6. Disable unnecessary networks in the host computer
7. Disable Firewall/VPN apps from the host computer.

1] Select connect network connection

By default, VMware uses NAT Used to share the host’s IP address option so that the virtual machine can use the host computer’s IP address while creating a network connection. This can create issues because of the IP conflict.

Therefore, you can choose the dedicated option, which can let you establish a Bridged connection with ease. If you select this option, it will allow you to replicate the host machine’s connection state. In other words, you will get more flexibility.

To use this option, select the virtual machine, and click the option that says Edit virtual machine settings. After that, select Network Adapter in the Hardware tab. On your right-hand side, you should get an option named Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network.

Select it and hit the OK button to save the change.

2] Restart VMware Bridge Control

Sometimes a simple restart fixes major issues. You can use the same technique to solve this problem as well. This is very easy to restart the VMware Bridge Control with the help of Command Prompt. If there are some internal issues in the VMware, that might be solved by doing this. To restart VMware Bridge Control, open Command Prompt with administrator privilege and enter these commands one after one-

net stop vmnetbridge

net start vmnetbridge

3] Select a particular virtual network

If you choose Bridged, NAT, or Host-only option, there is a chance that VMware might use a wrong virtual network. Although that is very rare, it may happen with you. Therefore, this is a pretty good option for you to select the specific virtual network manually so that every loophole can be blocked.

To do that, pick the virtual machine, and click the Edit virtual machine settings option. After that, go to Network Adapter option. On your right-hand side, you should an option called Custom: Specific virtual network under the Network Connection section.

From here, you need to choose VMnet0 and save your settings.

4] Select a correct bridged network connection

By default, VMware automatically selects the network adapter while creating a Bridged network. If you are getting the error above with your guest OS, you can choose the correct network adapter to create a Bridged connection. For that, open VMware and go to Edit > Virtual Network Editor. After opening the window, you need to click the Change Settings button and give it the administrator permission to make any change.

After that, you should find VMnet0 on the list. Make sure this is selected. After that, choose Bridged from the VMnet Information and select your host computer’s network adapter from the drop-down menu.

Now click the OK button to save your change.

5] Restore all settings to default

If you have made a lot of tweaks and the Bridged network has stopped working after that, you can always use the reset option that will make everything like new. To utilize this option, open the Virtual Network Editor, and click the Change Settings button to make any change in this window. After that, you can find Restore Defaults option that you need to use.

6] Disable unnecessary networks in the host computer

If you have used your host computer to connect to multiple Ethernet connections, it can cause this issue. The best way to detect that is by disabling all the additional network adapters in the host computer. To do that, press Win + R to open the Run prompt and enter ncpa.cpl.

Here you can find all the networks connections. Right-click on each connection and select Disable. Do not disable currently connected network connection and all networks named VMware Network Adapter.

7] Disable Firewall/VPN apps from the host computer

Although it should not happen, sometimes the VPN can cause this issue too. If you have recently installed a VPN app or firewall software in your host or virtual machine, this is recommended to disable it temporarily and check whether the problem remains or not.

Existing VMware partner agreements will be canceled by Broadcom on February 4. Partners must apply now to discover if they will be permitted to continue selling VMware By Broadcom. One source said partners making below $500,000 in annual VMware revenue are in danger of losing their partner status.

Broadcom is terminating all of its partner agreements with VMware resellers and service providers, killing VMware’s partner program and sales incentives, and then forcing existing partners to reapply for their roles, according to Broadcom.

Broadcom will tell partners next month whether they will be allowed to continue to sell its virtualization software.

“Broadcom remains committed to creating value within our combined ecosystem, which has been made stronger with the addition of VMware partners. Effective February 5, 2024, Broadcom will be transitioning VMware’s partner programs to the invitation-only Broadcom Advantage Partner Program,” according to a statement provided to CRN Saturday by Broadcom. “Based on recent discussions with hundreds of partners globally, this transition will help our partners achieve even greater opportunities for profitability through simplified bundled offerings and more opportunities for service revenues.”

An email to partners on Friday titled “VMware Partner Programs Termination Notice” announced the changes and told partners to “take this opportunity to ensure your company's contact information is correct within the 'My Company' section of the Partner Connect portal home page” as they wait to find out if they can still sell VMware.

For those invited to join the Broadcom Advantage Partner Program, the email – signed by the Broadcom Partner Program Office – touted simplified partner profitability opportunities with Broadcom’s net margin model; compensation for renewals as well as incumbency protection; deal registration discounts with differentiation by program tier; performance-based incentives for renewal business; and simplified certification requirements and free training for all partners.

One VMware partner who has listened to internal briefings on Broadcom’s changes and asked not to be identified told CRN that invitations are only expected to be sent to those reseller partners who make between $500,000 and $1 million or more in revenue.

“It is an invite-only program, but if you are in good standing, if you are making good revenue, everything else, I wouldn’t be worried with all of this,” the partner said. “I think it’s very important for everyone to understand that for the small partners, this is going to be quite a challenging scenario. We can only hope that there will be a tier two program where the smaller ones can work with larger ones to get through.”

For those smaller partners, particularly the roughly 4,000 VMware service provider partners, “It’s going to be a tough Christmas,” one source said.

“All contracts are terminated as of the end of January for most, but up until April for Service Providers,” said one VMware By Broadcom employee who asked not to be identified. “Only the chosen few will get to join the new program. The rest will no longer be able to sell VMware products.”

The employee, who has experience in partner facing roles, said this will only embolden VMware rivals, such as Nutanix.

“Those competitors are actively going after more business from the partners. In my experience, this change is too much, too fast, and will cause defections and a drop in revenue,” the employee said. “The most significant revenue drop will be for vSphere. Broadcom is pushing VMware Cloud Foundation. They are pushing bundles that force customers to buy things that they don't need.”

In the email Friday to its 65,000 global partners announcing the changes, Broadcom said resellers and service providers will be able to achieve greater “opportunities for profitability” thanks to a simplified model that focuses on fewer “bundled offerings.”

Broadcom said this provides partners with predictable up-front discounting and more opportunities for partner-delivered services revenue.

“Broadcom and VMware are driven by technology and innovation and have a shared passion for, and commitment to, partner profitability and success,” Broadcom’s Partner Program Office wrote in its email Friday. “You are now well-positioned to capture substantial growth opportunities for delivering advanced, innovative cloud infrastructure and associated services wherever your customers need.”

Broadcom closed its $61 billion deal to buy VMware on November 22, about three weeks after the deadline CEO Hock Tan had set. The deal took 18 months to complete and throughout that process, Broadcom repeatedly refused to speak with CRN about the future of the channel under its leadership.

Partners said the announcement, coming the weekend before the Christmas holiday caught them off guard, with one adding they had talked with their VMware rep hours before the announcement and were told nothing.

“They didn’t say anything to our team about the change coming,” said one who transacts millions per year in VMware business. “Its going to get interesting.”

Last week the free VMware player was released. It lets you run virtual machines, but not create them. [Faileas] contributed today’s how-to for creating your own virtual machines.

Programs required to carry out hack:

1. Copy of VMware Player

2. Browser appliance or another virtual machine(browser appliance is the smallest one, by size, and thus I am using that)

3. Notepad or other text editor

4. ISO image or CD/floppy of FreeDOS (I’m using the ripcord distribution) or MSDOS 7.1 would work as well, but i haven’t tried it yet.

5. Replacement OS (must have SCSI HDD support)

Once you’ve downloaded the browser appliance or whatever image you intend to use, the first step is to open up and edit the browser-appliance.vmx file. I used notepad for this, though any text editor should do.

I’d reccomend changing the settings as needed, though these are what i suggest. Change the value of memsize to 64 from 256. For most operating systems this is sufficient and you can change this later as needed.

Part 1: Using an ISO
The image i am using has been setup to use the physical CD-Rom drive of my system. Not really desireable when you want to install from a downloaded ISO. While using daemontools, or a similar CD mounting program is an option, a more elegant method would be to use VMware player’s own ability to read ISOs.

At this point i suggest saving and making a copy of the browser-appliance.vmx file, since it might be desireable to use a physical CD-Rom drive at a later point of time.

To do this replace:
ide1:0.fileName = "auto detect"
ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

with:
ide1:0.fileName = "C:targetcd.iso"
ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-image"

Where C:targetcd.iso is the location of the disk you intend to use. Once this is done, save the edited vmx file and run it.

Part 2: Removing the current OS

Now, at the startup screen
press escape and choose to boot from the CD drive at the next screen. If all goes well, you should be greeted by

where you should choose to boot from CDrom. From there
choose to boot to the second option “FreeDOS ** FAT32. At the next screen
pick the first option, to “boot with el toreto cd rom driver” (default)
and then the second option, to run FreeDOS from CD command prompt.

VMware Inc. is bringing virtualization to mobile phones through its new Mobile Virtualization Platform, or MVP.

Built on technology acquired from Trango Virtual Processors in October 2008, VMware MVP will help handset vendors reduce development time and get mobile phones with value-added services to market faster. In addition, the platform will let consumers run multiple profiles -- for example, one for personal use and one for work use -- on the same phone.

"We optimize virtualization for mobile phones, which is the foundation of MVP, giving you the ability to run multiple virtual machines on a single device," said Srinivas Krishnamurti, director of product development for VMware, Palo Alto, CA. "Running multiple environments at the same time has a lot of different benefits."

By abstracting the applications and data from the hardware itself, VMware hopes that virtualization will not only enable handset vendors to accelerate time to market but can also pave the way for innovative applications and services for mobile consumers.

Virtualization in the mobile space as a very promising and potentially a fast-emerging market.
Gartner predicts that by 2012, more than 50 percent of new smartphones shipped will be virtualized.

Virtualization can enable enterprises and consumers to manage and secure their phones and it can also help handset vendors reduce bills of materials and shorten development cycles to allow for faster releases.

There is a growing demand for virtualization technologies from both the designers and consumers of next-generation mobile devices using the ARM Cortex-A8 and Cortex-A9 processors.

VMware MVP is a thin layer of software that will be embedded on a mobile phone that decouples the applications and data from the underlying hardware.

It will be optimized to run on low-power-consuming and memory-constrained mobile phones.

The MVP is planned to enable handset vendors to bring phones to market faster and make them easier to manage.

The benefits to handset manufacturers include accelerated time to market and easier migration to rich operating systems.

Today, handset vendors spend significant time and effort getting new phones to market due to the use of multiple chipsets, operating systems and device drivers across their product families.

The same software stack does not work across all the phones and, therefore, must be ported separately for each platform.

This process is slow and expensive and ultimately slows time to market.

VMware MVP will virtualize the hardware, enabling handset vendors to develop a software stack with an operating system and a set of applications that is not tied to the underlying hardware.

This will enable the vendors to deploy the same software stack on a wide variety of phones without worrying about the underlying hardware differences.

At the same time, by isolating the device drivers from the operating system, handset vendors can further reduce porting costs because they can now use the same drivers irrespective of the operating system deployed on the phone.

Increasingly, handset vendors and carriers are looking to migrate from proprietary operating systems to rich, open operating systems to enable their customers to access the widest selection of applications.

With this transition to open operating systems, protection of trusted services such as digital rights management, authentication and billing is becoming an increasing concern.

VMware MVP will allow vendors to isolate these services from the open operating system and run them in isolated and tamper-proof virtual machines, so that even if the open environment is compromised, the sensitive services are not impacted.

The benefits to businesses and consumers multiple profiles and "persona on the go."

Companies are under increasing pressure from employees to support employee-owned mobile devices.

Choice, however, brings with it complexity in managing a wide variety of devices in terms of both cost and security.

It also brings increased risk in securing and managing employee-owned devices, especially if they contain confidential information.

VMware MVP will let IT organizations deploy a corporate phone personality that can run alongside the employee's personal phone on the same physical device.

Smartphones are becoming a combination of a PC and a wallet rolled into one package.

A person's phone persona -- an individuals' collection of applications, pictures, videos, music, emails, bank info, credit card information and PIM -- is becoming much richer and more valuable.

Consequently, the ability to protect and migrate personas will become an important purchasing decision.

VMware MVP will save the persona as a set of files so that all the applications and data on the phone can be managed as a collection of files.

People can then move their persona to a new device, making the upgrade to a new phone more convenient.

VMware specializes in virtualization services from the desktop to the datacenter.

With 2007 revenues of $1.3 billion, more than 120,000 customers and more than 20,000 partners, VMware claims to be one of the fastest growing public software companies.

"The notion of having multiple virtual personalities is interesting," Mr. Krishnamurti said. "I don't want to run my personal stuff on my corporate phone, so instead of having two phones, I have a work profile and a personal profile running right next to each other on the same phone.

"As we look at smartphones, they're not just a communications device, they're a computing device, a combination of a PC and wallet now that people can swipe their cellphone to make payments," he said. "Customers want to run mobile payments apps in secure containers, because they don't want them to be compromised, and virtualization is a key enabler for that as well.

"If you lose your handset or upgrade, wouldn't it be nice to take your entire persona with you onto your new device, reinstalling apps, copying data, copying those files onto your new device and your entire persona appears automatically."

VMWare has announced a new version of its Fusion virtualization software for Macs. According to the company, VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023 is a "significant leap forward" for its software on macOS, with the main highlight being the full 3D acceleration of Windows 11 for ARM.

3D hardware acceleration for VMware Fusion on macOS is a major change for customers. It allows better screen resolution, smoother and more responsive UI, support for DirectX 11 3D games, and more. In other words, adding hardware acceleration to VMWare Fusion is like installing a GPU driver on your Windows PC.

3D hardware acceleration is not the only new feature in VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023. Developers also implemented most VMware Tools features, such as clipboard sharing and "impossibly fast" drag-and-drop. There is also autofit support for dynamic resolution adjusting, time sync, improved security, and more.

VMware also notes that the Tech Preview features an improved encryption scheme, and it will prompt users to upgrade to the new encryption cipher at boot. Since the new scheme is not backward compatible, you cannot use the updated virtual machines with previous Fusion versions. To mitigate this inconvenience, VMware recommends cloning and backing up your VMs before upgrading and testing VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023.

Finally, in the official blog, developers said they have more features and improvements in the pipeline, so users can expect more additions in future updates.

These updates are most welcomed, but we’re still not quite done with what the Fusion has to offer in 2023… We have a few more exciting features and improvements in the pipeline which are not included in Tech Preview 2023 that we can’t wait to share!

Broadcom is refocusing VMWare on creating private and hybrid cloud environments for large enterprises and divesting its non-core assets.

Within weeks of closing the VMWare acquisition, Broadcom is already planning to pull the shutters down on two key units for the virtualization provider -- end-user computing and security -- while it refocuses on VMware’s core competencies.

"We're now going to invest and focus our sales and R&D on those core areas of VMware Cloud Foundation," Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said during the company’s earnings call on Friday.

"End-user computing, Carbon Black, good assets as they may be, we prefer now to divest them. We’ll find good homes for them because there are a lot of very interested parties who are more than happy to take those assets," he continued.

Broadcom's $69 billion acquisition of VMware hasn't been an easy transition, NetworkWorld reported earlier.

Trouble brewing with layoffs and top executive exits

The company is facing challenges with layoffs, the loss of Sumit Dhawan, a key executive, and concerns over retaining customers, amid fears that the acquisition could stifle innovation and lead to defections, with Forrester Research plotting some bearish predictions.

Tan said Broadcom is refocusing VMWare on creating private and hybrid cloud environments for large enterprises and divesting its non-core assets.

All this comes as the global market continues to look rosy for IT and cloud spending. Recently, Gartner forecasted that most major markets would see healthy growth in IT spending for 2024, including Europe, where it’s projected to be up 9% for the year, and India, which is projecting 11% growth.

Globally, IT spending is on track to jump 8% worldwide in 2024, the research firm said.

Broadcom forecasted a consolidated revenue of $50 billion for fiscal year 2024, with significant contributions from VMware and anticipated mid to high single-digit percent growth in semiconductor solutions revenue.

Revenue from wireless and server storage segments experienced downturns.

Like many other IT and semiconductor companies, Broadcom is seeing a bump in revenue attributable to AI, close to $1.5 billion in Q4 revenue, or a 15% increase over last year, and this is projected to grow.

"We expect revenue from generative AI to represent more than 25% of the semiconductor revenue, consistent with prior guidance, which more than offset the lack of growth from non-AI semiconductor revenue," Tan said, pointing to Ethernet solutions and AI accelerators as significant growth areas for the company.

Bring your ‘butt’ back to office

Tan has implemented a strict return-to-office policy, which hasn't proven to be popular with some staff.

"VMware has a beautiful campus in Palo Alto that remains empty," Tan reportedly told employees in August 2022. "Real estate isn't cheap."

This has been escalated to a mandate to return to the office if you live within 50 miles of one - or have a superb performance record.

"If you live within 50 miles of an office, you get your butt in here," he said, "Any other exception, you better learn how to walk on water if you want to work remote."

The Scottish Government is keen to automate as many services as possible. This leads to a  demand for new applications which in turn creates a need to spin up environments quickly, including virtual machines and middleware. 

Enter, VMware. The devolved assembly has been a customer of VMware for more than a decade, increasing its use during that time. Neill Smith, Head of Infrastructure in the Agriculture and Rural Economy Directorate, says: 

VMware has given us the ability to be flexible and to expand, whereas previously, in a physical world, that demand had becoming challenging. We have a large demand for applications. In a VMware environment, it’s quite easy to carve up the compute. So, we react to business challenges quickly, particularly from a political aspect.

On a day-to-day basis, Smith says VMware technology gives internal IT professionals the infrastructure flexibility they need to serve users effectively. By using virtualization, his team can install applications safely and securely:

We're fundamentally a software house. We develop in-house applications that we expose externally to other people, mainly farmers. We use virtualization and Horizon for our developers and our testers. We have about 300 users on that platform. So, we have our own network with our own infrastructure, where we can put our tools, and that platform supports innovation and creativity…We'll spin up virtual servers automatically. We automatically harden them, we'll deploy the middleware, and then we'll present it to the teams to deploy the code. The ability to spin up entire environments quickly and on demand is a huge benefit.

This scalable approach is a sharp break from the past when the team was reliant on physical hardware. Users who required additional compute would have to go through a procurement exercise, which could take weeks to complete. Now, new resources are provided quickly, which Smith believes has helped his team to overcome the cultural challenges that are often associated to new technology:

Humans are resistant to change. And I've seen that throughout the years across various projects. But the VMware piece was relatively straightforward. There wasn't much resistance. People were able to see the benefits pretty quickly because we were able to deal with their requests.

While the ability to add resources easily is crucial to the government, user requirements must be managed effectively:

We have the ability to carve up infrastructure. People think VMware is like just magic and you can give them anything at any point in time. It certainly looks that way, but, actually, it’s like an elastic band. If you stretch and stretch and stretch, it will break. And that breaking point means you need to manage resources.

Smith says his approach is focused on giving his people the ability to experiment and the opportunity to foster a culture of creativity in a public-serving organization that might not traditionally have been seen as a center of innovation:

If you're doing something over and over again, automate it. And if you automate it, that gives your people more free time to be innovative and creative, which they love and makes them happier.

There’s a sustainability angle in play as well. The Scottish Government has its own data center, based in Edinburgh, but the aim is to shut this resource down through 2026. As part of the shift towards green IT, the government is keen to push departments and users to the cloud. Smith explains: 

We're looking at moving our VDI workloads into VMware on AWS. That’s part of a big strategic plan and I’d like to think that work will be done by the end of next year. As part of that process, we'll be switching to Linux desktops on VDI.

He adds: 

We can allow developers to start consuming AWS-native services over the elastic network interface. So, we can start to drip feed them slow training and they can also start to expose more AWS services as they begin to scale up.

When it comes to the ongoing development of the VMware implementation, Smith says he’s keen to explore the Tanzu Application Platform, especially how its tools can be used to change the culture surrounding application implementation across government: 

I want to involve Tanzu in the software supply chain, so the business gets a quicker path to go-live and we create a hugely efficient service. If I can implement a change in culture – where we will have the software supply chain with proper platform engineering, and developers can just use an internal development platform – then the business can get what it wants much more effectively.
