During his iForum keynote, Citrix CEO Mark Templeton commented that Citrix is developing access infrastructure and application delivery models for the new world of distributed computing over the Internet. He noted, though, that the complexity imposes a management challenge for Citrix, as well as for customers and partners.
"You have an increasing number of applications to deal with and the mix is growing. A whole set of [application] architectures, multi-tiered client/server, Web applications, HTML, Web services, desktop applications, Win32 and Java -- all in the data center, desktop and data center," Templeton said. "This is the kind of landscape you face, and we need to deliver application infrastructure you need."
To that end, Citrix is designing "Kevlar" and "Iris" system health monitoring and management capabilities as part of its Constellation project for the Longhorn Server, due in 2007. The technologies will provide user experience monitoring, service level agreement monitoring, improved audit and compliance, hot updates and scaling, automatic load balancing, on-demand system configuration for continuous operations and system state management.
But those technologies won't be available for two to three years, executives acknowledged. Citrix needs ISV partners and service firms to extend and improve management for the current platform, executives said.
"We can't do this alone," said Scott Herren, a group vice president at Citrix, adding that the company's software development kit and future platform extensions enable ISVs and partners to improve management of Citrix in heterogeneous environments.
At iForum, ISVs in droves jumped in -- including RTO Software, Visual Networks, Enteo Software, Reflectent, Apptimum and Ingenica. These ISV partners debuted products that offer end-to-end management, automated configuration management, monitoring, performance analysis, bandwidth optimization and migration needs for Citrix customers.
RTO Software, of Atlanta, for example, unveiled its RTO Optimization Console for managing the Citrix Memory Optimization Management capabilities in Presentation Server 4.0. RTO licensed that server performance optimization technology to Citrix for inclusion in version 4.0, which shipped earlier this year as part of Citrix Access Suite 4.0. The console gives partners and users additional memory optimization tuning capabilities not in the Citrix server, including optimization scheduling and history. The multi-server centralzied console is available at no cost for managing local servers and licensed for remote servers.
Visual Networks, of Rockville, Md., announced a new offering that gives administrators in-depth visibility into Citrix application traffic. enabling them to proactively monitor network performance.
Select Bandwidth Manager for Citrix Presentation Server, one module of Visual Networks' Visual Uptime Select suite, gives administrators in-depth visibility into published applications under Citrix's ICA protocol. This allows administrators and partners to identify bandwidth use on a per user and per application basis while also having an end to end view into all Citrix published applications and nonCitrix applications across the network, at local and remote sites. It will be available in early 2006. Pricing begins at $2,500 per site.
Others ISVs entered into the advanced management and monitoring market for Citrix server farms.
Enteo Software, Schaumberg, Ill., announced its first management suite for Citrix Presentation Server that simplifies and automates configuration management and centralized management for server farms and fat clients.
Enteo Management Suite for Citrix Presentation Server, which recently began shipping, offers secure change management, and creates a test environment in which administrators and partners can model how applications will behave in live Citrix situations. It also provides drag and drop procedures that make it easier to set up Citrix servers, and add new servers, users and applications to the environment, the company said.
"You can automatically maintain, configure and control Citrix servers," said Chuck Fritz, vice president of Americas for Enteo, based in Stuttgart, Germany. "In the past, people used the cookbook approach but resources started to strain after [imaging] seven servers."
Pricing starts at $42 per concurrent user, with volume discounts available. Enteo has traditionally sold direct but introduced at iForum this week a new channel program aimed at Citrix resellers.
Enteo also distributed at the conference a sales accelerator CD for Presentation Server that allows resellers to simply run an algorithm and install a Citrix server for customers in roughly 45 minutes. Typically, it takes between five to eight hours to build and install a Citrix server demonstration at a customer site, Fritz said.
Meanwhile, Reflectent Software also announced that it has extended its existing systems management software for Citrix Presentation Server that focuses on end users. The company's first EdgeSight for Citrix Presentation Server, a tool that monitors and diagnoses application and system performance issues associated with Citrix user sessions and associated servers, was officially announced on Oct. 3 and will ship in November, the Westford, Mass., company said.
With this tool, administrators install an agent on Citrix's ICA-based client and can access simultaneous views of the end user session and server activity. It will enable better resource management and capacity planning, and allow administrators and partners to quickly size up performance problems, executives said.
"The agent sits on the Citrix server and collects data about the server, memory, login time, session duration, number of active sessions and CPU and memory and makes it available on a per user session basis," said Howie Markson, vice president of product marketing at Reflectent. "If someone complains about performance, it knows which server your session are being served from, and looks up your session on that server."
The cost is roughly $200 per concurrent user. The EdgeSight for Citrix Server software is priced at $25,000. The company has traditionally sold direct but has taken on a select number of resellers and service partners, Markson said.
Other ISVs are targeting the growing base of Citrix servers being deployed at small and midsize companies and enterprises served by channel partners.
triCerat, of Columbia, Md., announced at iForum its own management suite, upgraded and integrated for Microsoft Terminal Server and Citrix Presentation Server 4.0. Simplify Suite 4.5, which is available now, includes Simplify Printing, Lockdown, Profiles and Resources modules.
The company's ScrewDrivers v4 driverless printing technology, for example, ensures full functioning printing on any printer, regardless of the application, and batch printing for enterprise customers. It also features SmartPrint, triCerat's zero configuration utility for universal client printing. The Lockdown utility allows IT administrators to prevent users from running unauthorized applications. A hardened triShell v2 utility replaces Windows Explorer.
The third module, Simplify Profiles, enables companies to build personalized user environments with a single point of control for registry administration. The final module, Simplify Resources, assumes control over the way Windows allocates and manages processing and memory resources. This allows administrators to increase the number of sessions that can be supported across farms, and provides realtime monitoring and reporting capabilities based on the WMI [Windows Management Instrumentation] format. SmartMonitors, new in the version 4.5 release, offers more graphically rich tools that can be accessed from the Simplify Module or over the Internet via SSL, triCerat said.
Ingenica, of Toronto, Ontario, announced ManageView, a fully hosted Windows or Citrix server monitoring tool for small and midsize businesses. Priced at roughly $75 per server per month, it collects server data such as server uptime, CPU memory and hard disk usage over Internet connections and graphically presents the information over the color-coded ManageView Dashboard.
Apptimum, based in Sunrise, Fla., announced Migrate CI, a program that fully automates server migration to the Citrix Access platform. The firm's rules-based Computing State Engine helps customers move applications to Citrix Presentation Server and the full Citrix Access Suite. It is available on a per server basis from the company and from select partners.
Additionally, Citrix hardware and software partner Wyse Technology introduced its latest thin client, Wyse S10, based on the recently released Wyse Thin OS Version 5.0. The new thin client supports multiple sessions with seamless windows, plug-and-play installation and configuration, stateless operation, and client imaging from a standard FTP server, the San Jose, Calif., company said.
Citrix itself announced its own Management Pack designed to ease management of Citrix servers within Microsoft Operations Manager 2005. The Presentation Server Management Pack for MOM 2005 enables joint customers to monitor, collect, filter and analyze data from Citrix Presentation 3.0 and 4.0 servers and server farms from within Microsoft's management and monitoring platform.

Both Chrome and Firefox have this default setting where they preview PDFs instead of downloading them. This can be a bit annoying, especially if you want to save them but are in a hurry. Therefore, in this article, we are going to see how to download PDFs instead of previewing them in Chrome and Firefox.
Download PDF instead of Previewing in Chrome
Google Chrome has its own PDF Viewer, so, when you click on a PDF, it will be opened with Chrome’s PDF on the browser itself. Therefore, we need to disable Chrome’s PDF viewer to download PFDs instead of previewing them.
To do that, launch Chrome
Click on the three vertical dots from the top-right corner of the window
Cick Settings.
Now, you need to click Privacy & Security from the left panel
SelectSite Settings from the right panel
Scroll down a bit, and click Additional content settings.
Click PDF documents and enable the toggle of Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome.
This way you will be able to download PDFs instead of previewing them in Chrome.
Download PDFs Instead of Previewing Them In Firefox
If you don’t use Chrome but Mozilla Firefox, you can still download PDF instead of opening them. Firefox also has a built-in PDF Viewer, just like Chrome, so, when you click on a PDF, the document will open with Firefox PDF viewer. To download PDF instead of previewing them in Firefox, you can follow the given steps:
Launch Firefox, click on the three horizontal lines, and select Options.
Make sure you are on the General tab and scroll down a bit to reach Applications.
From the “Portable Document Format (PDF)” section, change Open in Firefox to Save File.
This way you will be able to download PDFs instead of previewing them in Firefox.
If you use Microsoft Edge, and you want to download PDFs instead of previewing them, check out our guide.

Best project management software: quick menu
With the normalization of home working following the pandemic, project management software is more important than ever, giving remote teams an easy way to manage projects and tasks.
Whereas it used to be the case that paper or spreadsheets would be required, these days, project management software is usually able to provide a range of tools to help improve productivity and make the management of tasks easier.
Features might normally include the ability to set up a team and allow communication between members, the assignment of specific subtasks with dates for completion, as well as goals, interactive calendars, progress reports, and analytics to provide data on workflows.

Microsoft Project is one of the more advanced project management platforms available today. It features cutting-edge technologies that allow you to identify the best way to schedule projects and find optimal solutions for distributing workloads across your team.
If you’ve ever used Microsoft Excel or another Microsoft productivity tool, the chances are that you’ll feel at home when navigating around Microsoft Project. Like other Office programs, tools and shortcuts can be found in a bar at the top of the screen.
However, “at home” doesn’t mean “comfortable”. Although Project might look similar to Excel, you’ll need to have a grounding in project management concepts to fully understand what’s going on in the Microsoft Project interface. On the left part of the display, you’ll find a spreadsheet related to task and resource data. Meanwhile, on the right-hand side is an interactive visualization of your schedule.Â
Taking some time to familiarize yourself with this program before confidently taking on any given task would be a wise choice, even for those who would consider themselves “advanced” in skill and knowledge of project management tools and software.
Although it won’t be winning any prizes for simplicity, Microsoft Project remains an excellent project management tool for experienced professionals. Its ability to forecast project costs and assign resources based on intricate details mean it can simply go further than and do more than the alternative project solutions.
Asana is a project management solution you may have heard of – even if you haven’t used the service in the past. While it offers a ton of handy features to boost productivity, there’s a bigger emphasis placed on tracking.
The app lets you create to-do lists and reminders so you always meet deadlines, plus you can add due dates, colleagues, instructions to tasks, and comment on items. You can even share images from other apps (like Google Drive) directly to Asana. And more importantly, you can actually track everything you and your colleagues work on in a bid to ensure the project is running smoothly and to schedule.
If you’re concerned with who is working on certain projects, then you can bring up a list of teams and individuals, and there’s also a search functionality so you can find completed tasks easily.
Asana offers a free Basic tier, with limited functionality and dashboards. Step up to the Premium, Business, or Enterprise tiers and you unlock additional features, as well as administration and management options.
Miro is one of those online tools that aims to bridge the gap between traditional office working and the modern hybrid routine that many of us are familiar with. It is best described as a multipurpose online collaboration tool, and its list of features is pretty extensive stretching beyond the typical realms of similar software.
The majority of the work you’ll end up doing in Miro will revolve around what it calls boards, which start off as entirely blank spaces. Setting one up from scratch can be daunting and time-consuming, which is why the company has designed templates that you can pick from the get-go.
Some of its most commonly accessed templates include mind maps, Kanban boards, flowcharts, product roadmaps, and timelines. Many of these will serve well as project management tools, and anybody familiar with other project management software like Airtable or Trello will already be familiar with how they work.
Overall, we think Miro is hard to beat. Its long list of features should cover all parts of a typical business process from research and design to presentation, and its collaboration abilities are second to none. Furthermore, its transparency around security and reasonable pricing make it hard for us not to recommend it. The only thing we could wish for is better support channels.

Over the last few years, Trello has emerged as one of the most popular project management applications. It lets you organize all of your work-based and personal projects through a computer, tablet or smartphone. Trello is notably used by the likes of Fender, Google and Kickstarter. Â
You’re able to set up boards to organize everything you’re working on, delegate tasks among colleagues, get customized workflows, add to-do lists within task cards, attach files and comment on items. The idea is that you manage all aspects of a project within the app, regardless of whether it’s team-based or assigned to an individual.
Both Windows and Mac desktops are supported, with mobile apps available on Android and iOS devices; there’s even a version that’s been optimized specifically for the iPad Pro. The latter sports a larger canvas and a variety of handy email shortcuts to speed up projects. It’s free to download to give it a spin, and can be used on the free tier, although there is a limit on the size of file attachments.
Upgrade to Business Class and you get additional features, including one-day email support, and integration with other services such as from Google and Slack, as well as higher attachment limits.
Zoho Projects is another project management tool that allows users to plan, organize, and collaborate on projects, while using Gantt charts for detailed visualization of progress and schedules.Â
There are also options for document management, time keeping, as well as tracking and fixing errors. A range of integrations are available, such as Slack, Google, Dropbox, as well as the numerous other Zoho suites.
Pricing is dependent on both the number of users, number of projects, and the depth of features required, with higher level plans offering unlimited projects and higher limits according to the plan subscribed to. There is a free plan available to explore the software's features.
Basecamp is one of the oldest project management solutions, having been around for more than 10 years, building a reputation which makes it a highly credible tool for businesses that work on big projects.
The latest version of the app offers a variety of helpful features, including the ability to send direct messages for quick discussions, set up a schedule so you only get notifications within work hours, and show your appreciation for colleagues by clicking an applause button. Basecamp avoids a fragmented workflow, and as the firm says, it keeps “discussions, tasks, files, schedules and chat in one place.”
There are some nifty functions for dealing with clients, too. For instance, you can easily save and track client feedback and approvals, and you can also get reports on how projects are going. And when you want to collaborate with others, you can create group chats.
A free version lets you work on up to three projects with up to 20 people, to allow you to try out the software. After that, there's only a single paid-for plan, which includes all features and an unlimited number of users, making this a great deal for teams but not so much for individual users.
Liquid Planner has a robust feature set for enterprise-grade project management, boasting corporate customers which are leading Fortune 500 firms including Bayer, Cisco and Daimler.
Features include the Smart Schedule that can assist in prioritizing work, assigning people resources, and then estimating the hours needed for completion, which then allows the project to be tracked given the hours devoted to it by the assigned workforce.
Conversely, the Resource Management feature can show the hours put in by each worker, and track who is available to assign to the next project. All of this data feeds into easy-to-read dashboards that can be integrated into financial metrics and trends.
Note that there is a free 14-day trial to take Liquid Planner out for a test drive before you commit.

With the Podio app, you have the ability to create tasks and customize them based on your workflow, taking into account deadlines and responsibilities. There’s also a built-in instant messaging function that you can use to share ideas and see how others are getting on with delegated tasks. Additionally, there is a handy tool for getting quick feedback without having to send several emails.
There are integrations with third-party services such as Dropbox and Google Drive, meaning you can share content quickly and easily. Podio is available in a number of additional languages, including French, German, Danish, Chinese, Spanish and Russian.

Some people claim that Agile does not have a place for the role of the project manager. That is a harsh claim, though, and it is a little like someone who has just turned 18 saying to their parents, “I don’t need a parent anymore”.
The role of a project manager was firmly established before the Agile movement, largely because work on software was usually organized as a project: that is, a chunk of work that was budgeted for, and was scheduled for, and for which requirements were defined up front.
Today, software is best viewed as a living thing: once you create it, you need to keep evolving it. Thus, the view that you create it and then maintain it, and that if you ever need to change it you propose a project - that approach is too slow and cumbersome. Instead, one needs to build the evolution of the product into its process for creating and maintaining it.
It is like for most living things, most creatures are not born and then stay the same, and then at some point undergo a metamorphosis and change to a new state. Some do that, but most are born and then continue to evolve and change continuously throughout their lives. Software is like that today - or needs to be, to keep pace with today’s market demands, let alone stay ahead of the market.
The “project” construct is based on a corporate finance model whereby an organization is in a steady state, and one then proposes a “project” and an accompanying ROI analysis - usually through an annual planning cycle - that will change the organization to a new state. That heavyweight and plodding approach is an obsolete model. Today, change needs to be continuous. The construct of “project” should be reserved for things that need an unusual boost - a “one-off” step change - but most things need continuous change, so most things should not be funded as projects.
A better way to look at automated business systems is as products: things that comprise a capability, that have a life cycle, and that are continuously being enhanced.
If most business initiatives are not funded and managed as projects, then there is less of a need for project managers; but project managers have skills that are still needed.
Unfortunately, the top-heavy methods of the 1990s created a community of project managers who were trained in those top-heavy methods. It is those methods that are largely obsolete for software. They still work for other things, such as building construction, but software is just too dynamic. Software is not like a building: you cannot see it, you cannot assess at a glance how “done” it is, it connects in myriad ways, rather than only in three dimensions. It is different every time, you never build the same software twice, even though there can be some requirements that are repeated.
That means that the process of building software is not repeatable, and so it cannot be managed as such. It is a highly creative process, and there is a lot of trial and error in it. One cannot fully design software upfront; one has to create a tentative high-level design, build it and alter the design as one discovers some elements don't work right until everything fits and works in the end. This is a craftsmanship of unique products that won’t be the same again.
Such efforts need leadership, and organization, and decision making, and inspiration. The function of management includes all these things, by definition, and thus, there is very much a role for managers; but what does not work is an autocratic manager who tells everyone what to do, or one who sits at their desk checking off documents. Instead, leadership is needed, from the managers and from others, and the kinds of leadership that work are those that encourage thoughtfulness, rational Socratic discussion, and transparent decision making. People need a high degree of autonomy - not complete autonomy, but a lot. They also need a lot of coordination, and those who lead need to be good listeners and always watching for issues that are being overlooked.
Which project management software is best for you?
When deciding which project management software to download and use, first consider what your actual needs are, as sometimes free platforms may only provide basic options, so if you need to use advanced tools you may find a paid platform is much more worthwhile. Additionally, free and budget software options can sometimes prove limited when it comes to the variety of tools available, while higher-end software can really cater for every need, so do ensure you have a good idea of which features you think you may require.

Competing upgrades and replacements could significantly impact future changes to the larger market share. Due to the fast-expanding features of the software, digital technologies are being used across numerous manufacturing industries, further accelerating the market's growth.
New York, United States, Dec. 19, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- License management is a powerful tool that an organization uses to document and manage its software licenses to assure compliance with the software developer's license. It offers total transparency into how much software is being used across the company, can optimize all licenses, cut costs, and protect upcoming software investments. When software is bought, installed, or accessed by an organization, a license agreement is made with the licensor.
In addition to the licensor's inherent rights, these End-User License Agreements (EULA) specify the terms under which the product may be used, which could expose the organization to risks like data security breaches, employee liabilities, unanticipated costs associated with non-compliance, and unfavorable legal positions. Businesses across various industries utilize software licensing management to monitor, regulate, and optimize software usage within their organizations. Digital technologies are being adopted across many manufacturing industries due to the rapidly expanding features of the software used, which stimulates the expansion of the licensing management market.
Growing Demand for Optimizing Software and Audit-Readiness in Organizations Propel the License Management Market
According to Straits Research, "The global license management market size was valued at USD 977 million in 2021. It is expected to reach USD 2,125 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 10.2% during the forecast period (2022–2030)." Optimization is essential to this growing trend as more companies adopt cloud computing and go digital at every opportunity. Businesses are focusing on decreasing operational costs due to the ongoing erosion of their profit margins. Using licensing management software is another way to reduce costs. Companies are constantly seeking strategies to increase software use and reduce the losses resulting from license non-compliance. Businesses may manage all contracts, agreements, licensing entitlements, and software inventories from a single location with license management.
By employing license management software to efficiently organize and archive software agreements, businesses may safeguard themselves against unanticipated license payments and penalties. Several strategies, including fewer license purchases, avoiding fines for non-compliance, decreasing renewals by doing away with shelfware maintenance, and optimizing volume discounts, it has enabled enterprises to reduce the cost of purchasing software.
Increasing Cloud Hosting Business Creates Lucrative Opportunities for License Management
Businesses view the cloud as a critical component of their IT strategies to stay relevant in the market. The advantages of low-cost, scalable, and flexible solutions offered by cloud computing technology are advantageous to customers. Over 90% of companies claim to utilize cloud computing in some way. As a result of advancements in cloud technology, businesses from various industry sectors are eager to take advantage of the commercial potential of cloud hosting. Now that cloud hosting is available, the license management hosting team may benefit from its potential for increased revenue. DXC offers hosting programs for Microsoft SPLA, Citrix, and VMware; RLMCloud from Reprise Software; and FlexNet Cloud Licensing Service from Flexera Software are all available for managing software licenses in the cloud.
Regional Insights
North America will command the market, expanding at a CAGR of 9.86% over the forecast period. Most of the top producers of licensing management software, such as Agilis Software, IBM, Micro Focus, and Oracle, to mention a few, have their primary offices in the US. Since its member countries, especially the US and Canada, invest extensively in technological breakthroughs, the region is among the most revenue-producing. Over many years, the quantity of new products sold by foreign vendors in the area has increased tremendously. For instance, Chronicle Graphics presented their new License Management System. This new enterprise-level platform allowed OnePager Pro and Express users to quickly and rapidly obtain and activate their license keys online. Thus, these elements drive market share.
Europe will likely grow at a CAGR of 10.2% by 2030. The coronavirus pandemic accelerated the growth phase of the SaaS industry and the subscription industry. The SaaS industry is growing due to paid conference and collaboration software applications. The Subscription Industry Study 2021 by billwerk, which focuses on the DACH region, claims that the pandemic increased demand in the software as a service (SaaS) segment as the number of people working from home and homeschooling prompted the need for specialist software tools to skyrocket. Even for firms that previously had little to do with it, the advent of software-assisted processes and equipment has raised the necessity of licensing management across all industries. These factors are promoting market expansion across Europe.

The way to manage task dependency in a complex project like this one is to use project management software.

Why We Picked It
Celoxis is reasonably easy to use with a short setup time. Medium to large businesses will like that it includes time tracking, budgeting, and resource management tools. Celoxis offers two plan types, a cloud-hosted one that starts at $25 per person per month (and costs less if you pay for a year or two upfront) and an on-premise option that comes with custom pricing. The company formerly sold the on-premise plan for a flat per-person-per-year rate but no longer does. We still believe Celoxis has the best value among project management apps for medium and large organizations.
Who It's For
Celoxis is one of the best project management apps for medium and large organizations. This app provides ample reports and other tools that give decision-makers and business owners value. For example, you can use Celoxis to not only work most efficiently by adjusting project schedules, but also to forecast revenue.

Who It's For
While LiquidPlanner can be a great project management app for teams of any size, we think it's especially well suited to larger enterprise teams working on complex projects. One reason is because LiquidPlanner's area of specialization is automated scheduling. Smartsheet
Best for Automations
Why We Picked It
If you're willing to put in the time to learn what Smartsheet can do and customize it to your needs, it's very powerful. It might become your go-to tool not only for project management but also for other collaborative business.
Who It's For
Smartsheet is the project management app for people who like to increase productivity through automations. That means you're willing to put in the time to set up "if this, then that" type commands that Smartsheet carries out for you automatically. For example, you might have an automation that says, "When someone marks a task as blocked, and the task status is 'in progress' or 'for review,' then alert the person assigned as the manager for that task." Most other project management apps don't have automation options built into them, though sometimes you can create them using third-party tools such as Zapier. One note about Smartsheet: Not all the tiers of service come with time tracking, budgeting, and resource management for free, though you can pay for the companion software that adds them.
PROS
Endlessly customizable and quite powerful
Supports automations, input from web forms, proofing and approvals
Robust resource management options for Business plan users
CONS
Lacks real-time time tracking and invoicing tools
Pages don't update in real time or autosave as frequently as we'd like

We like this app best for small teams who may not have a dedicated project manager on hand. TeamGantt doesn't have budgeting or invoicing tools, which is another reason it's better suited to small teams rather than large ones.
PROS
Intuitive and easy to use
Excellent interactive Gantt charts

Wrike
Best for Managing Projects and Ongoing Work
Why We Picked It
Wrike is a powerful tool not only for project management but also for use as collaboration software. Now owned by Citrix, Wrike supports team collaboration, work management, and project management. It continues to grow by adding new work intelligence features that can, for example, predict when a project is at risk of falling behind and call attention to possible causes.
Who It's For
Wrike has a few paid plans targeted to very specific types of teams, namely marketing, creative industries, and professional service teams. Wrike is very good at what it does, so long as you put in some time to pick the right plan and learn its features—expect to work with Wrike's customer support on this process, rather than merely paying for an account and setting up the app on your own. In that sense, Wrike is for larger teams that have the time and resources to dedicate at least one person to work with Wrike during setup.

Modern, easy-to-use interface
Can manage both projects and ongoing work

Buying Guide: The Best Project Management Software for 2024
What Is Project Management Software?
Project management software, sometimes called PM software, is a type of online collaboration tool. All the people who are working on a project log in and see what they're supposed to do and when. These workers also record their progress on those tasks and add relevant details, such as notes about any changes. With the appropriate permission level, people can also learn more about what everyone else is doing, what requirements must be met for them to get it done, and when.
For the project manager, the project management app provides a clear overview of each project's progress. Are all the tasks on track to be completed on time? If one task is late, how does it affect the projected deadlines of items on the task list? Is someone available to pick up an urgent task if the person assigned to do it is ill? Plus, if the project management app supports tracking finances, the app will also tell the people in charge whether the project is running on budget.
How We Choose the Best Project Management Software
For this list of the best PM software, we evaluated and tested more than 25 project management platforms and have included here the products with the highest scores. Inclusion is based on PCMag's independent testing and evaluation. In determining scores, we consider the needs of a variety of business types, including small businesses on a budget and large organizations that need to manage many complex projects, people, and budgets simultaneously. We also look at ease of use, features, and value.
For this category, we stick to traditional project management apps only. These apps are specifically created to manage projects. A project is a set of work with a start date, an end date, and a deliverable. We don't include apps for managing ongoing work, such as answering support emails.
To be included in this list, the app must offer Gantt charts, which are a type of timeline view commonly used in project management. All the apps included here also have other standard tools in addition to Gantt charts for tracking, organizing, and scheduling project-based work.
While there are many excellent workplace collaboration apps and task management apps that are sometimes called "project management apps" (such as Trello, Basecamp, and Airtable), we don't include them here. Collaboration or work-management apps are very capable when it comes to managing certain kinds of work, but they aren't necessarily designed for juggling the complexities of dozens or hundreds of projects and their schedules simultaneously. Therefore, we don't include them here.

What Can You Do With Project Management Software?
Project management apps let you track progress and manage nearly any kind of project, such as the creation of a new product, building a house or website, or launching a marketing campaign. Teams that use project management apps tend to track more than one project at a time. The software helps them figure out when to schedule work based on when things need to get done and the human resources available to do them.
The best project management apps detect problems before they happen through detailed task management. By tracking the progress of work and individual tasks (for example, having completed six hours of a task that's estimated to take a total of eight hours), project management apps can sound an alarm when a deadline is in danger of slipping, but before it actually happens. The most powerful project management apps also offer to automatically reflow the project schedule when tasks do fall off course. They generate reports that give project managers insight into which team members have too much or too little work assigned. Some let you track project budgets and log billable hours so that you can send invoices to clients for time worked.

What Is the Best Free Project Management Software?
A few of the best project management software systems have a free plan. The only one that made this list that is truly free is Redmine—more on that service momentarily. The free plan for most apps is severely limited in some way. For example, you might be allowed to manage only one or two projects at a time or invite only a handful of people to work alongside you. In the paid plan, you might get unlimited projects. Plus, you usually don't get all the most advanced features of the paid plan in the free plan. Still, if you have a small team and only need to manage one or two projects, it might work. Free versions also let you try out the app before deciding whether the paid plans meet your needs.
You can get a free account from Zoho Projects, Teamwork, Wrike, TeamGantt, ProofHub, plus a few others that did not make this list, such as AceProject.Â
Redmine is a 100% free PM tool, but you have to install and maintain it yourself. It's not an off-the-shelf product but rather an open-source alternative that requires you to have your own tech support. If you're looking for something simple to start using right away, Redmine isn't it. For simplicity, you're better off with Zoho Projects, TeamGantt, or AceProject.
What Project Management App Is the Easiest to Use?
If you're new to project management and especially if your organization doesn't have a dedicated project manager, you need a project management app that's easy to use.
TeamGantt and GanttPro are the easiest project management apps to learn and use. They are both designed for beginners and other people who are inexperienced at project management.
Many of the project management apps we've reviewed are easy to use, provide good video tutorials, and work well for beginners, but after testing dozens of them, we believe GanttPro and TeamGantt are best.
In testing, we found that some rather popular and well-known project management apps, such as Microsoft Project, are not especially easy to use if you are new to them or not a professional project manager. While we have reviewed many of those tools, not all of them scored high enough to be included in this list of the best project management apps.
What's the Best Project Management App for a Small Business?
If your project team needs to manage and track a couple of projects, but you're less concerned with employee scheduling, collecting time sheets to bill clients, and comparing the progress of multiple projects in development, a low-cost tool such as Zoho Projects (starting at $5 per person per month for Premium) is your best bet. What we especially like about Zoho Projects is that it scales easily if your team ends up growing and needs more features. Zoho, the company, offers a wide range of other business apps that can connect to Zoho Projects to expand what you can do with it.
We also like GanttPro as a low-cost option. It's one of the easiest tools to use and is great for people with limited or no prior experience with project management.
There's no need to spend more than about $15 per person per month if you aren't going to use the tools that are unique to more expensive software, so stick with something inexpensive.
What's the Best Project Management App for Large Organizations?
Large organizations have starkly different needs than small businesses. Organizations with hundreds or thousands of employees and hundreds of projects use project management apps for scheduling, insights into their resources, budget-tracking, revenue projection, and time-tracking for billing purposes, among other reasons.
Recommended by Our Editors
For a large company, it's important to be able to manage not just individuals but also teams. If you have 15 hours of work for a junior designer, and it doesn't matter which junior designer does it, you want to see how much work each junior designer has assigned to them and whether you can free up one of them for the task.
For the same reason, all the managers and team leads in your company should be able to see what tasks are high-priority and which projects are in danger of slipping so that they can triage accordingly.
If your organization handles complex projects and has many team members collaborating on projects, we recommend Celoxis or LiquidPlanner.
What Project Management Software Has the Best Special Features?
Teams that are neither small businesses nor enormous organizations may have special needs that they want their project management software to address.
Our top pick in this category is Teamwork, which is specialized to handle client work. If your team primarily completes projects as billable work for clients, then Teamwork should be on your shortlist. It includes billing and invoicing, as well as the ability to create intake forms for new projects. Another app called Paymo, which didn't quite score highly enough for this list, also has built-in billing and invoicing tools.
There are other areas of specialization for project management software, of course. If you're looking for a tool that can manage both project and non-project work, we recommend Wrike or Celoxis. (LiquidPlanner is a good pick, too, but we think it's best for large groups.) If your team spends a lot of time discussing and iterating visual assets, ProofHub is a great choice. Smartsheet is good for building automation into your project management.
Choosing the right project management software can take time, but it's worth having as much nailed down as possible before rolling the solution out to an entire team. Project management apps typically have a significant setup cost. Even when they are simple to learn to use and let you import project data, it still takes time to fine-tune the app to do what you need it to do and then get everyone on board using it.
It's also important to consider what kind of work your team does, how many people are in the organization, and how you want to run your business. There are a lot of excellent options to fit every budget.
With a reliable project management solution in place, people can collaborate with greater ease on project work. Plus, small business owners and team managers can get useful insights into how their teams work, whether projects are on track, and how to guide them back to a successful place when they slip.
