Inaugural COP28 Health Day Commitment Advances New Guiding Principles for Financing Climate and Health Solutions, Launched Today
DUBAI, UAE, Dec. 2, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rockefeller Foundation is announcing a USD 100 million commitment to address the health impacts of climate change. Joining 40 multilateral development banks, governments, philanthropies, and civil society organizations, the Foundation also endorsed the Guiding Principles for Financing Climate and Health Solutions, launched today at the World Climate Action Summit, to accelerate investments in and policy development on climate-health solutions that increase country ownership, accessibility, and long-term impact.
"Health is the human face of climate change, and Health Day at COP28 is a historic moment for health and climate leaders to commit to advancing the well-being of the 3.3 billion people who are most vulnerable to climate change," said Dr. Rajiv J. Equitable Financing to Support Country Priorities
The inaugural Health Day at COP28 marks a significant step in prioritizing the importance of climate and health on a global scale. The Rockefeller Foundation is committed to amplifying this impact through collaboration with its partners to increase the quantity and effectiveness of financing focused on supporting the efforts of low- and middle-income countries to mitigate, withstand, and respond to the escalating impacts of climate change on health. Though more than 90% of countries including health-focused priorities as part of their National Determined Contributions for climate mitigation and adaptation under the Paris Agreement, recent data suggests only 0.5% of climate financing is allocated toward health projects. Moreover, countries face a bevy of requirements – unique to each funder and imposed on them – when attempting to access funding.
The newly released Guiding Principles for Financing Climate and Health Solutions seek to address this financing gap by establishing priorities for funding and policy to support the building of resilient and sustainable health systems. The Principles seek to ensure that countries gain increased access to climate-health financing that is responsive to their people's needs and priorities, especially the most vulnerable. The Republic of Malawi, for example, has endorsed these principles, and will drive climate and health financing accordingly in its Malawi Agenda 2063.
The COP28 Presidency in partnership with The Green Climate Fund, the World Health Organization, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and The Rockefeller Foundation developed the Guiding Principles, which were informed by a convening hosted at The Rockefeller Foundation during the United Nations General Assembly. NEWARK ― Tuesday's Newark Lions Club Foundation Games featured plenty of the familiar in Jimmy Allen Gymnasium, but also, a breath of fresh air.
Steele Meister picked up where he left off last year for the Wildcats' Division I district champs, while Carter Mallernee and Northridge showed they will again be hard to handle as they defend their Licking County League-Cardinal Division title. And Heath's girls showed the same scrappiness that carried them to the LCL-Cardinal girls' crown.
New on display, however, was a Newark girls team that will feature an entirely different starting lineup, and the youthful but talented Wildcats did not disappoint.
Meister popped in 22 points for Newark and Mallernee cashed in 20 for Northridge as the Wildcats pushed aside the Vikings 61-45 in the second game of the annual exhibition doubleheader.
The opener saw Emma Quackenbush, a 5-foot-10 freshman point guard, display her considerable talents with 14 points and six assists as Newark ran past Heath 63-39.
"Emma does a good job pushing it up for the floor, looking up for what's available and finishing at the rim," coach Jack Eifert said of Quackenbush, one of two Wildcats' freshman starters along with Calli Geller. "We have pretty good size, but we also have speed and depth, and can put the pressure on," he added. "We're deeper and can go position by position, and we can run with teams, play fast and play the tempo we want."
That was evident from the start, as Newark's full-court, man-to-man pressure led to a 16-5 lead with five different Wildcats scoring. Quackenbush had four second-quarter assists, including to juniors Cadi Gordon and Addi Hall for 3-pointers while also nailing one herself as Newark extended its advantage to 36-19 at the break.
The Wildcats led 49-26 through three before Heath finished the game on a 7-0 run, a pair of baskets by hustling junior Peyton Del Cecato sandwiched around a 3 from senior Hannah Cash. Del Cecato led the Bulldogs with 14 points, senior stalwart Caroline Robertson added 13 and Cash had a trio of treys for nine.
"Peyton has really improved, and she and Caroline will be our catalysts," coach Katy Barry said. "We've had a good preseason, and coming in, we expected a physical battle. It was a good test, to see where we are and what we need to improve on. We may have been a little intimidated at first, but we continued to fight, did not give up and did not back down."
Hall, who came off the bench, added 11 for well-balanced Newark, which saw nine players crack the scorebook. Geller tallied all eight of hers in the first half and junior Megan Herriott also scored eight.
"We saw the younger players in middle school, and we've been waiting for them to get here," Eifert said. "We have high expectations. We'll look at the great moments and not so great moments, and know what we're capable of. We can go with different starting lineups, depending on matchups and who plays well in practice."
The Newark boys also had some youngsters step up in the injury absence of returning starters Ethan Stare and Austin Rose, who are expected to return soon. But four-year southpaw starter Meister was reliable as ever, as he took the floor with juniors Braylon Morris and Kalen Winbush, and sophomores Ty Gilbert and Jake Quackenbush. Gilbert played extensively as a freshman and has taken over at point guard.
"Steele was good, really efficient," coach Jeff Quackenbush said. "Ty has had a good fall so far, and he has some really big shoes to fill for Burk" (Grant Burkholder, now at Mount Vernon Nazarene).
Meister scored on a drive and hit a 3, and Jake Quackenbush also hit from long range as the Wildcats jumped ahead 11-0. But the veteran Vikings chopped it to 11-6 by end of the first quarter, then Mallernee took over with eight second-quarter points as Northridge trailed just 20-16 midway through the second.
But Newark always stayed a step ahead, freshman Kolton Peterson draining a 3 and Meister a fadeaway as the Wildcats took a 25-18 halftime lead. Mallernee's 3 kept the Vikings within 31-27 midway through the third, but Newark, going with a younger lineup, responded with 3s by sophomore Bodi Smith and Peterson, and Meister's coast-to-coast reverse layup pushed the margin back out to 39-29. Morris had seven fourth-quarter points.
"With Stare and Rose not available, our younger guys got some experience, which was good," coach Quackenbush said. "We struggled with our rebounds, which we're going to do all season, but we got to a lot of 50-50 balls. Northridge is going to be good. They have size and Mallernee is a good player."
Ethan Payne (6-5) scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half for the Vikings, who also started 6-8 Alex Quinlan and whose smallest starter was 6-1.
"At the half, we talked about that, using our size, and Ethan went out and did that," coach Bill Mallernee said. "We're probably not going to see defense like that all year, so it was good for us. We scrimmaged them this summer, it was a nice battle, and we decided to play them again. Our kids love it, so it was easy for me to love it."
Added Mallernee: "We have a couple of spots to replace from last year, which is something to work for, and I was pleased with our effort." The Vikings hit 50 percent from the field but just 2-of-13 on 3s. They went 10-of-11 at the line.
Meister also had six rebounds and three assists for Newark, which shot a blistering 19-of-32 from the floor for 59 percent, including 8-of-15 on 3s, and a near perfect 15-of-16 foul shots. Morris and Peterson added 10 points apiece, Gilbert had eight and Winbush chipped in with five rebounds and four assists.

PARTY season is in full swing and I’m suffering a hangover.
Not from the prosecco (that’s another story) but from the pandemic.
While it feels like TikTok has a fresh beauty trend every milli- second, my make-up habits have got 2020 written all over them.
And I’m stuck in a rut of applying the same old eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss for any night out.
It’s dull and predictable.
So when Fabulous invited me to try out some beauty counter makeovers, I was eager to see if I could rediscover my make-up mojo in time for Christmas.
Beauty counters aren’t new, of course.
They’ve been around in the UK since 1910, a year after Selfridges opened its doors on London’s Oxford Street and heralded a beauty revolution.
Prior to that, make-up was frowned upon and had to be bought surreptitiously.
I’m pleased to say we’ve come a long way since then (well, unless you count Sephora’s launch day, when I had to smuggle my haul into the house without my husband spotting it).
Although there aren’t as many traditional department stores in the UK as there used to be, there is still an abundance of beauty counters to enjoy up and down the country, as well as standalone beauty stores and pop-ups.
Wherever you choose to buy your make-up, having an in-store makeover is a brilliant way to try out the latest and greatest products — and be shown how to apply them properly by a professional make-up artist.
And it’s simply perfect for an out-of-practice make-up enthusiast like me.

Even the more in-depth masterclasses are redeemable against the cost of whatever products you treat yourself to.
In short, a make-up counter makeover is as near as you can get to a guilt-free shopping experience — and what could be more beautiful than that?

DOES it count as cheating if I tell you Nars enlisted one of its head make-up artists to do my makeover?
Maybe, but if (like me) you go to the flagship Spitalfields boutique in London, you can often book the brand’s top pros – if they’re not busy doing celebrities instead, that is.
I opt for Nars’ classic “winged liner and red lip” combo; a look I love in theory but usually mess up in reality.
My make-up artist shares plenty of tricks, including a smart way to draw the ideal liner flick (plot it in light strokes first then join them up and thicken the line).
She also finds me the perfect orangey-red lipstick shade, and pairs it with a blue-red liner for a crisp, multi-dimensional lip.
By the end of my session, I’ve had a full masterclass as well as a makeover, and I’ve already rebooked with them to learn Nars’s awesome “smoky cloud” eye technique.
Now I just need a party to go to . . .

Bobbi Brown, Get Party Ready, £55 for 60 mins

NOBODY does a soft and smoky eye better than Bobbi Brown, so this make-up counter is definitely my comfort zone.
I’m excited to have the brand’s signature eye make-up applied by a pro, and having it done in the plush surrounds of the Selfridges beauty hall is just an added bonus.
You can choose whatever look you want, but this is THE brand to come to for something pretty and polished, so if it’s wedding day make-up on steroids you’re after, this is the place for you.
I pay close attention as my make-up artist talks me through every step, from the flattering foundation to the tight-liner trick, whereby you line the waterline of your eye inside the lashes, making them really pop.
Obviously I could never hope to match the precision of a Bobbi Brown pro, but there’s nothing here that strikes me as hopelessly unachievable, and I’ll definitely be trying these techniques at home.
The look is perfect: Think party without being tarty.

I’M the first to admit I’m a total beauty magpie.
So when my Kiko make-up artist opens a sparkly silver eye palette and then suggests a festive makeover, my pupils dilate.
I was ten minutes late so we had to cut a few corners, but Kiko’s bustling Regent Street store in central London is the perfect spot for a party makeover.
Before we get to the make-up part, there’s the serious business of skincare – and multiple potions are applied to my face to prime it for some dancefloor-proof foundation and subtle cheek enhancement.
The aforementioned palette doesn’t disappoint and leaves my lids twinkling like a Christmas tree.
But the eye make-up is slightly overshadowed once the red lip is added.
I should have just stuck to emphasising one area and gone for a neutral lip, but this is me all over at Christmas: Overindulging and regretting it.
I’ll definitely go back though as I’m a huge Kiko fan.
But hopefully next time I won’t be in such a rush that I realise, once home, I’ve run off without getting my mascara done. Doh!
IF Barbie designed a make-up parlour, we imagine it would look like Too Faced’s very, VERY pink Carnaby Street branch.
And “dolled up” is exactly how you’ll look after this Speed Date makeover.
You pick two facial areas to focus on, so I opt for contouring and lip plumping.
After applying moisturiser and foundation, my make-up artist goes full Kardashian on me, painting triangles of concealer under my eyes and sculpting my nose and cheekbones with dark brown lines.
As a 48-year-old mum of two, I fear I’ll look like mutton dressed as glam.
But with some nifty blending, the contour lines fade and my cheekbones look impressively defined.
After lip liner and tingly plumping gloss, I’ve got the look of lip fillers, minus the bill and the bruising.
The final effect is full-beam glam, but slightly marred by the concealer creasing under my eyes.
Overall I like it although my husband’s verdict is, “You look like the AI yearbook version of you!”
